About

Hi, thank you for visiting my webpage.

The website exists in order to allow me to post about my favourite interests – Maps – including Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Spatial Data, Local history of South Wales and getting out and about exploring Wales in general. I believe these interests all compliment each other perfectly I hope will post content that you have found interesting.

By day I am a GIS and spatial data lead for a public sector organisation in Wales. My career in GIS began in 2005 and I have been fortunate since to have been able to further my knowledge and skills in various roles within GIS around the world, carrying out data acquisition and management, complex spatial analysis and the production of high quality bespoke cartographic products.

In 2012 I completed an MA in International Journalism at Cardiff University (My interest in creating content is probably why I am writing this blog…). As part of this I explored how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can help the investigative journalist to uncover trends and present findings as the subject of my dissertation: “Mapping the News”. Most of the output of this I have posted on this site in the hope someone may find it interesting.

After this I worked in further education as a spatial analyst and technical demonstrator for a leading geography department before embarking on my new role in the public sector.

Hopefully someone may find my posts on these subjects interesting. Please feel free to look around and post a comment or get in touch if you have any questions or advice.

Kind regards,

Richard.
